Discipleship, Dying to Self

Discipleship, is a journey I hope you will join me on. Being transformed into the likeness of Jesus, on purpose.

When I am forgotten or neglected and I am not hurt with the insult, my heart remains happy ~ that is dying to self.

When my advice is disregarded, my opinions ridiculed, and I refuse to let anger dwell in my heart and take it all in patient, loving silence ~ that is dying to self.

When I lovingly and patiently bear disorder, irregularity, tardiness and annoyances, and endure it as Jesus endured it ~ that is dying to self.

When I never care to refer to myself in conversation or have any record of my own good works, or crave praise after an accomplishment and can truly love be unknown ~ that is dying to self.

When I see a brother or sister prosper and can honestly rejoice with them, and feel no envy even if my own needs are greater ~ that is dying to self.

When I can take correction, when I can humbly submit inwardly as well as outwardly, with no rebellion or resentment rising up within my heart ~ that is dying to self.

1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. 9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.

John 15:1-15

I have a prayer, written out and on the wall that my desk is against that I pray often.

Dear Lord, prune me that I may ask for Your Holy Spirit to fill me.

Please Lord, grant me the Spirit of Wisdom that I may not be attached to the perishable things of this world but seek only the things that are eternal.

Please Lord, grant me the Spirit of Understanding to enlighten my mind with the light of your divine truth.

Please Lord, grant me the Spirit of Right Judgment that I may choose the surest way of pleasing You.

Please Lord, grant me the Spirit of Courage that I may bear my cross with you and that I may overcome all the obstacles that oppose my salvation.

Please Lord, grant me the Spirit of Knowledge that I may know You and know myself in You.

Please Lord, grant me the Spirit of Reverence that I may find service to You sweet and attractive.

Please Lord, grant me the Spirit of Wonder and Awe that I may be filled with loving reverence towards you and may avoid anything that would displease You.

Mark me, dear Lord, animate me in all things with Your Spirit.
